Do you wake up with a sore jaw, tension in your face, or headaches? Maybe your dentist has told you that you’re grinding your teeth, or you’ve caught yourself clenching your jaw during a stressful day. If that sounds familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
Teeth clenching and grinding—also known as bruxism—is incredibly common. But it’s often treated by protecting the teeth rather than asking why it’s happening in the first place.
That’s one of the things I love about acupuncture. In Chinese Medicine, we look beyond the symptoms to understand what may be contributing to them.
Why Do We Clench Our Jaw or Grind Our Teeth?
For many people, jaw pain, teeth clenching, and teeth grinding are linked to patterns such as Liver Qi Stagnation, where stress and emotional tension can become “stuck” in the body. This may lead to tight muscles, jaw tension, and clenching.
When the stagnation becomes more severe, it may also contribute to symptoms such as:
-
Tension headaches or migraines
-
Tinnitus
-
Red eyes or face
-
Facial and jaw tension
Others may have a pattern of Stomach Heat, which can show up as grinding the teeth at night, irritability, bad breath, excessive hunger, and excess tension.
Instead of only treating the jaw, acupuncture can support the nervous system, help relax overworked muscles, improve circulation, and address the underlying imbalance that may be contributing to jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
Acupuncture for TMJ and Bruxism Symptoms
When we treat the root, many people notice benefits beyond their jaw. They may find that they are sleeping better, feeling calmer, and carrying less tension throughout the day.
Jaw clenching and teeth grinding can also be associated with temporomandibular disorders, often called TMD or TMJ disorders. These conditions may involve jaw pain, difficulty opening or moving the jaw, clicking or popping, headaches, and facial muscle tension.
And it’s not just traditional wisdom that supports this approach. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture improved pain and jaw-function outcomes for people with temporomandibular disorders. The authors also noted that the overall quality of evidence ranged from low to very low, meaning more high-quality research is still needed. A Holistic Approach to Jaw Tension
If you’ve been living with jaw pain, clenching, or teeth grinding, know that your body may be trying to tell you something. Instead of only managing the symptoms, acupuncture offers a gentle, holistic way to support your body’s ability to relax, heal, and find balance again.
If you’re experiencing persistent or worsening jaw pain, it can also be helpful to work with your dentist or another qualified healthcare professional to evaluate your teeth and jaw joint.
